Police have arrested seven more people in connection with an armed robbery and killing of a police officer during a shoot-out outside Giyani, Limpopo, on Tuesday.
“Information was received that five of the suspects boarded a taxi that was destined to Polokwane. The necessary police units, including members of crime intelligence were activated and the five were subsequently nabbed at Solomondale and Polokwane intersection after the police stopped the taxi matching the same description,” said police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.
“Two other suspects were earlier arrested with the help of community members in Giyani, the other, [under police guard in hospital] was nabbed immediately after the shoot-out.”
Police had responded to an armed robbery early Tuesday at a local store when a shoot-out between the robbers and the officers ensued.
Constable Thulani Vincent Rali Mhangwani, 38, was shot and killed during the exchange of fire. He was attached to Giyani police’s crime prevention unit.
One of robbers was arrested on the scene and admitted to hospital for treatment of injuries. The rest of the group managed to flee on foot.
The men, aged between 26 and 30, would soon appear in the Giyani Magistrates’ Court on charges of murder, robbery and possession of illegal firearms.
