The SANDF is expected to release its report ‘tomorrow’, which will give details of the next steps to be taken.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is expected to release a report to Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality on the possibility of resuming rescue operations of the five-year-old boy who fell into a deep disused mineshaft near Boksburg.

Five-year-old Richard Thole fell down the shaft in the informal settlement known as Jerusalem on Saturday, February 25, 2017.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality spokesperson Gugu Ndima on Tuesday said the SANDF was expected to release its report “tomorrow”, which will give details of the next steps to be taken.

SANDF was deployed to assist emergency services last week with rescue operations into the 100m deep shaft. But shortly after that the rescue operations had to be halted because the ground was unstable and the heavy rains worsened the situation.
