The bodies of six children were found lying outside of the vehicle, according to ER24 paramedics.

A child was killed and five others injured Thursday morning after a light motor vehicle crashed into a tree on New Modder Road in Benoni, east of Johannesburg, ER24 paramedics said in a statement.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said that on arrival with other emergency services, the wrecked vehicle was found on the side of the road against a large tree.

“The bodies of six children were found lying outside of the vehicle. Paramedics immediately assessed the patients and found that one boy, believed to be 14 years old, had sustained fatal injuries.”

“Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the child and he was declared dead on the scene.”

Meiring said five other boys were assessed by paramedics, and two were found to be in a critical condition, while the three others had sustained moderate injuries.

“Paramedics treated the patients and provided the critically injured with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, the patients were transported to Sunshine Hospital for urgent treatment.”

Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
