Man accused of murdering North West mayor’s son in court

The case against the suspect was postponed to March 3 for investigation.

A 22-year-old man accused of stabbing to death the son of Ventersdorp-Potchefstroom mayor appeared briefly in court on Friday, North West police said on Friday.

Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said Johannes Vumile Vemendleni appeared in the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court after he was arrested on Thursday. His case was postponed to March 3 for investigation.

“He was arrested in connection with an alleged murder a 30-year-old man who is said to be the son of Ventersdorp-Tlokwe NW 405 Municipality Mayor. The victim’s body was found on the street with a stab wound on 18 February 2017 at Extension 11 in Ikageng. The motive of the incident is still unknown,” he said.

Mayor Kgotso Khmualo’s son Mike Maimane was found stabbed to death in Ikageng near Potchefstroom on Sunday. He was apparently stabbed and robbed.

His funeral service will take place at the Banquet Hall in Potchefstroom on Saturday.
