The South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) on Friday said it had received reports of violent attacks on journalists from the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) who were covering the march against foreign nationals in Pretoria.
In a terse statement, Sanef said the journalists were robbed of their mobile phones. Their equipment was also taken by demonstrators in the protests in Pretoria today.
“We would like to appeal to members of the community to remember that journalists need to be able to do their work without fear or favour,” said Sanef.
“We would also like to urge the journalists to report the incidents to the police and call on the police to investigate and charge those responsible for the attacks.”
