“The ANC Youth League mourns the passing-on of Mama Martha Mahlangu, a [African National] Congress movement stalwart….. and a mother of a fearless freedom fighter, Solomon ‘Kalushi’ Mahlangu,” National Co-ordinator Magasela Mzobe said in a statement.
“We [dip] our revolutionary banner, respecting the best mother she has been to the Mahlangu family, the ANC and broader congress movement.”
Mahlangu died at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria on Wednesday.
Mzobe said they would dedicate the political activities the Youth League would be involved in this month and in April to the un-dying evolutionary spirit of both Martha and Solomon.
“We want our young women to be fearless and loyal to the struggle like Mama Martha Mahlangu. We want our young men to be exemplary and dedicated to the life of the congress movement like Solomon Mahlangu,” said Mzobe.
Her son, Solomon “Kalushi” Mahlangu, was hanged at the Pretoria Central Prison on April 6, 1979.
He had been charged for the murder of two white civilians in Johannesburg two years earlier.
