Two suspects who were arrested for possession of crack cocaine and heroine have appeared in a Durban court, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in KwaZulu-Natal said on Thursday.

Indresh Pather, 45, and Abu Talib Essop, 42, were arrested on Tuesday and Monday in Overport and Bonela, respectively, after the Hawks received information. Both suspects appeared in the Durban Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Hawks KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said the Hawks had launched an investigative operation on Monday to arrest Pather before the arrest of Talib Essop on Tuesday.

“An operation involving the members of metro police was at Bondsvick Centre in Overport, where Pather was arrested for dealing in drugs. He was found in possession of 28 pieces of crack cocaine and twelve small packs of cocaine powder to the street value of approximately R19 800. Panther remained in custody and his case postponed to Monday, February 13,” Mhlongo said.

Mhlongo added: “The operation continued on Tuesday and officers swooped in on houses at Bonela and a search warrant was executed. During the search in the house, 3 900 heroin tablets were found, and Talib Essop was immediately arrested. The street value of the seized tablets is approximately R95 500,” he said.
