Commuters forced to dig deep into their pockets

Taxi commuters across the country will be forced to dig deeper into their pockets in two weeks’ time.

Bafana Magagula, deputy general secretary of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), told The Citizen that a fare increase of between 10% and 20% will be implemented on all routes.

“The fares will go up by between R1 and R5 for short distance (local trips) and between R10 and R15 for long distances.

“It is unfortunate that we have to hike the fares, but we can’t cope with the petrol price increases,” Magagula said.

Already commuters tra-velling between Johannesburg and Pretoria, are paying around R35 for a single trip, while those travelling between Ennerdale and Johannesburg are spending R18.
