Durban skyscraper blaze to be investigated

An investigation is under way to determine the cause of a fire that ripped through the 25th floor of a Durban skyscraper.

eThekwini Metro Municipal spokesman Mandla Nsele said the blaze that occurred on Wednesday night at the Redefine Towers building in Pixley ka Seme Street was being investigated. He said there was no immediate indication of what had started the blaze in the early evening.

“The fire was confined to the south wing of the building on the 25th floor (320 Dr Pixley Ka Seme Street). There was minor damage to the 26th floor, water damage to the 24th floor and smoke damage to the floors above 25th floor,” he said.

There were no injuries or fatalities to either civilians or members of the eThekwini Metro Fire Brigade who battled for a number of hours to extinguish the blaze, which was fanned by strong winds.

Comment could not be obtained from Redefine Properties and it was not immediately clear how much repairs from the blaze would cost.
