A new hijacking trend is doing the rounds in Gauteng, warn police.
Hercules police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said criminals removed registration numbers from parked cars while residents were out shopping, reports the Centurion Rekord.
When the person returns to their car and drives off, the criminals follow.
The criminals then flag down the victim, seemingly to hand over the “lost” number plate.
When the person stops to get the number plate back, they get hijacked.
Msimango urged motorists to always be aware of their surroundings before they stop their cars.
“Don’t stop anywhere you don’t feel safe. If you feel a need to stop, find a garage or a busy area,” he said.
Msimango said he was aware of the modus operandi, but no cases had been reported in Pretoria yet.
