A police diving unit, assisted by the NSRI, found and recovered the body of the 29-year-old, who was from the city’s northern suburbs, during a scuba diving search on Sunday afternoon, said NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon.
The man was reported missing after going into the water at Bantry Bay.
“The body of the man was located and recovered in the vicinity where he was last seen by eye-witnesses entering the water… ,” Lambinon said.
The police had opened an inquest docket.
In another operation, police divers would continue their search on Monday for a man who went missing while swimming in the sea at Wilderness on the southern Cape coast. Search efforts on Sunday proved fruitless.
The man, who was believed to be a local, as well as two Irish missionaries, were swept out to sea by rip currents.
The Irish men made their way to safety without assistance and were released from hospital in satisfactory condition, Lambinon said.
“Police are continuing an investigation into the incident,” he said.
