At least two gang members were killed and, according to eyewitnesses, knives and pangas were used.

The case of murder against Denis Potsane is expected to continue in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning.

Potsane was arrested a few weeks ago following the gruesome killings which involved two rival gang groups based in an area called Bophelong.

This would be the suspect’s third court appearance. At least two gang members were killed and, according to eyewitnesses, dangerous weapons such as knives and pangas were used.

Initially a total of three suspects were arrested but the other two were later released due to the withdrawal of statements by some witnesses.

Vanderbijlpark police early this week denied claims made by some residents that they were not doing enough to fight the scourge of gang violence, which has already claimed the lives of several gang members, including some ordinary citizens.

Police spokesperson Seargent Gertrude Makhale said it appears many residents fear for their safety, hence their unwillingness to be witnesses in cases involving gang violence.
