As many as 150 buffaloes, 50 rhinos, and 50 sable antelopes from the provincial parks were donated to certain individuals.

North West Rural, Environment and Agricultural Development MEC Manketse Tlhape, is expected to appear before the Parliament Portfolio Committee on environmental affairs on Tuesday to answer questions about the rhinos, buffaloes and sable antelopes given away to individuals.

The committee will grill Tlhape about wildlife worth more than R100 million donated to certain individuals in the province.

As many as 150 buffaloes, 50 rhinos, and 50 sable antelopes from the provincial parks were donated to certain individuals in the second half of 2015.

The provincial department was scheduled to brief the committee about the donations on November 1, but it failed to appear before the committee. No apology or reasons for non-attendance were given.

In a statement chairperson Philemon Mapulane, said the portfolio committee wanted to know the circumstances under which the donations were made, the policy used and if the department had made donations of similar high-value species in the past and if so to whom.

The committee also wants details of the species available in various parks prior and after the donation, whether there was any impact on the viability and the breeding potential of the remaining species.
