Labour federation Cosatu will not give the ANC money to campaign for the May 7 general elections.

Acting Cosatu general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali yesterday said to give the ANC money to campaign would be illegal.

“Cosatu does not give money to the ANC for elections,” he said.

“That is against the law. In fact, we should be asking money from the ANC. The election budget of R4 million is little for that.”

He said the federation would instead run a campaign on why workers should vote ANC. “Some of the affiliates have paid the political levy,” Ntshalintshali said.

“Cosatu remains fully committed to support and mobilise its members for the ANC election campaign and ensure another victory on May 7.”

Numsa supporters of suspen-ded Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi resolved at a special congress in December not to endorse the ANC in this year’s general elections.

They also said they wanted to stop their contributions to the affiliate’s R500 000 annual political levy to Cosatu.
