Residents burn tyres as De Aar triple murder suspect appears in court

The 18-year-old suspect made a brief appearance in the court following his arrest in connection with the murder of three family members at the weekend.

Police are monitoring the situation outside the De Aar Magistrates’ Court in the Northern Cape, where irate community members are burning tyres after an 18-year-old suspects appeared in connection with the murder of a couple and their son, 10.

A post on the South African Police Service (SAPS) Facebook page read: “The trio were brutally murdered last Saturday in the early hours of the morning. The victims sustained multiple stab wounds. After an intensive investigations by police, the suspect was arrested.”

The suspect appeared in court on Tuesday morning and was remanded in custody. He will appear in court again on November 28 for a formal bail application. Police are continuing their investigations.

Outside the court, community members burned tyres, and the leaders of the concerned residents were meeting with police to resolve the matter as police monitored the situation.
