Mbete got married to beau Nape Khomo in Mqanduli, in the Eastern Cape, over the weekend.
The intimate ceremony was a traditional one and was attended by about 100 guests, who are close friends and family of Mbete and Khomo. Lobola was paid the day before the wedding in the form of 11 cows, 10 of them pregnant.
Khomo, who is 10 years younger than Mbete, is a Bloemfontein businessman who has interests in communications and energy. Their wedding was a pink and grey affair. This is the second marriage for Mbete who was married to Keorapetse Kgositsile for 14 years and divorced in 1992.
Speaking to Sunday Times, Mbete shed some light on her relationship to Khomo.
“By the time we met, I was long past that [previous] marriage. I actually hadn’t been in a relationship for 10 years when I met this comrade.
“Ten years is a lifetime, yes. I guess it’s a matter for psychologists. Maybe it was partly a matter of personal policy.
“Secondly it’s a matter as to how, as a human being, even though it might not be conscious at the time, you protect yourself,” said Mbete.
There was yet another reason to celebrate the day for Mbete as it was her 67th birthday.
On Twitter, deputy president of the EFF Floyd Shivambu congratulated Mbete, saying it was never too late to tie the knot.
Congratulations and best wishes to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms. B. Mbete-Khomo on her marriage. It's never too late.
