It is alleged three suspects armed with firearms broke into a house in Lenasia Extension One, in the south of Johannesburg, and tied up two domestic workers with strings before locking them in the outside toilet on Friday, September 23.
As the suspects were forcefully trying to open the house, the owner of the house arrived with his brother. The suspects fired shots at them, injuring the brother.
The neighbourhood watch members in the vicinity heard the gunshots and swiftly responded.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo told The Citizen: “It is alleged that a shootout ensued between the suspects and the neighbourhood watch members, which resulted in the killing of the three suspects and one neighbourhood watch member. The neighbourhood watch member murdered was turning 61 years old on the day of the incident.”
He added: “The fourth suspect who was in the getaway car, a blue BMW, was apprehended and allegedly assaulted by the community. He was taken to hospital under police guard.”
Police recovered three firearms at the scene, apparently belonging to the suspects.
The police are investigating a case of murder, attempted murder, attempted house robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
