Social media attacks on the dress sense of heavily pregnant Arts and Culture portfolio committee chairperson Thandile Sunduza last week at the State of the Nation Address (SONA) was yesterday blamed for her collapse after the event.

Sunduza, who wore a bright yellow boob tube dress clearly showing her pregnancy belly, collapsed on Friday at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, Gauteng, on her return from the annual event in Cape Town.

By yesterday afternoon she was still in the Parklane Clinic in Parktown under strict medical supervision as she is in the advanced stage of her pregnancy. She was not taking calls.

Sunduza’s appearance on the SONA red carpet on Thursday evening almost instantly sparked a social media frenzy that saw her called many names that also included “Oros’ wife” and “egg yolk”.

Springing to her defence yesterday was the ANC Chief Whip, Stone Sizani, who in a statement, described the social media outburst as “cyber bullying”.

However, the statement comes after Sunduza had already posted on her Facebook page that she was not fazed by the criticism of her dress and blamed her designer, Mihlali Gqada, for the fashion faux pas.

“I’m not sure about comments about my stomach that I’m Oros’ wife. Oh, thanks to the designer who let me down at last minute. The dress was torn, cloth falling, had to cut it in the office. It was a disaster,” she posted.

Gqada hit back yesterday also using her Facebook page and said what the MP wore was not the ensemble she had made for her, but an “under garment” of the actual dress.

“… she unanimously with no consultation with me went and got the dress redone by people I do not know without my knowledge which is her prerogative as that petticoat she ended up wearing as a dress was exactly that – the under garment of the dress…,” she said.
