An alleged robber has been shot and wounded and another arrested in connection with a cash-in-transit heist, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

Police received information on Sunday night that the two were travelling on the N2 in a bakkie used during a robbery last year, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

“Police approached the vehicle at the Tongaat Toll Plaza where two alleged suspects alighted and fled on foot while shooting at the police,” Zwane said.

“Police retaliated and [wounded] one suspect, who was taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard, and the second one was arrested.”

Police believed the two had been involved in a heist in Greytown in November last year. They took an undisclosed amount of cash at gunpoint from security guards.

On Sunday, police recovered the bakkie used in the Greytown robbery, and two firearms with the serial numbers filed off.

The arrested men, aged 27 and 30, would face charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of suspected stolen property.

“The seized firearms will be sent to ballistics to ascertain whether they were used in the commission of any other crime in the country,” Zwane said.
