Three men who resurfaced from the abandoned Langlaagte mineshaft in Johannesburg on Monday morning were nabbed and questioned on the scene by about 15 police officers after several illegal miners resurfaced and fled the police.
The miners came out of the same shaft where an unknown number of illegal miners have been trapped in Johannesburg’s oldest goldmine since Wednesday last week.
Rescue operations over the weekend saw scores of illegal miners resurfacing, but many have fled arrest, escaping through a nearby field.
Three arrests this weekend angered community members, many of whom have taken the plunge down the dangerous shaft before, pleading with police to let them help the miners themselves.
Police said the three miners would be taken down to the police station but did not say if they would be arrested.
A growing crowd awaited Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane’s arrival at the scene on Monday morning.
