Harmony Gold chairperson Patrice Motsepe, one of South Africa’s wealthiest businessman, yesterday asked forgiveness from the families of nine workers killed at the company’s Doornkop shaft last week

“They lost their lives while in our care. We will respect the Department of Mineral Resources’ investigation and will grant no fear or favour to see what really transpired here and ensure this never happens here or at any of our other operations again,” he said.

He was speaking at a memorial service, attended by hundreds of the miners’ colleagues, friends and family members, held at the mine west of Johannesburg yesterday.

The nine were killed after an an earthquake triggered an underground rockfall which broke electrical cables and sparked a fire on February 4.
