Explosion kills Amplats mineworker in Rustenburg

Amplats says an independent and comprehensive process is under way to understand the circumstances of the incident.

Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) has on Monday reported the death of a mineworker who was injured in “an explosion-related incident” at its Rustenburg East mine.

In a statement, Amplats chief executive Chris Griffith said an independent and comprehensive process was under way to understand the circumstances of the incident.

Amplats recorded an improved safety performance with no fatalities during the first quarter, ended in March.

Amplats is selling its Rustenburg mining and concentrating operations to Sibanye for at least R4.5 billion.
