On Sunday, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) issued a statement to say that an outgoing Gauteng member of the mayoral committee (MMC), Dan Bovu, had been attempting to bribe some of its members.
The EFF alleged that Bovu tried to bribe its councillors to the tune of R500 000 so they would vote for the ANC during the election of the Johannesburg City Council on Monday.
However, when contacted by The Citizen shortly after the allegations broke, Bovu denied ever meeting with any EFF councillor.
“I was away this weekend with my family and I never met with anyone from the EFF. Where will I even get so much money to bribe people … I don’t do bribes,” Bovu said.
He was unaware of any criminal case being opened against him.
There have been numerous reports of the ANC’s numerous last-ditch efforts to try to prevent Johannesburg getting a DA mayor on Monday, but this is the first allegation that it may have gone as far as bribery attempts.
On Sunday, ANC mayoral candidate Parks Tau said although he might no longer be the mayor, his party was ready to occupy the opposition party benches in the metro. He told reporters that coalition talks with opposition parties were still ongoing, and that the outcome would be revealed on Monday.
In its statement, EFF party spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said: “The EFF condemns the outgoing Member of Mayoral Committee, Dan Bovu, who has been calling EFF Councillors in Johannesburg to offer them bribes in exchange for votes. The EFF in Johannesburg will be opening a case of bribery against the ANC’s Dan Bovu who thinks our democracy is up for sale.
“Dan Bovu has been calling our councillors, offering them money to the value of R500 000 in exchange for them to vote with the ANC during the elections of the Johannesburg City Council tomorrow.”
The EFF called on the ANC to “concede defeat” after it lost major metros Tshwane, Johannesburg and Nelson Mandela Bay to the opposition party the DA.
The party said it would open a case of bribery against Bovu.
“The ANC must concede defeat and not try to win elections through corruption. Even if they were to be successful on Monday to buy any councillor candidate, their mayor will not last because political parties have the right to replace councillors.
“The EFF’s votes are not up for sale, be it money or positions. We are going to punish the ANC in Johannesburg which has failed to transform people’s lives for the past 22 years.
“We are going to punish them for all the arrogance of choosing to protect corruption at the expense of the people. We are going to make sure that democracy prevails and that Dan Bovu is arrested and jailed for attempting to bribe EFF councillors in exchange for votes.”
