A manhunt is under way for robbers involved in a cash-in-transit robbery at the Mall at Carnival in Brakpan yesterday.

The robbers hit the transit van as it collected money at the mall on the East Rand at around 9.15am. They fled with 10 cash boxes containing an undisclosed amount of money.

Eyewitnesses said they heard gunshots and immediately ran inside the mall.

Brakpan police confirmed four security guards had entered the mall to collect money, while the driver remained in the van.

No injuries were reported, despite online posts that a person had been shot and killed during the robbery.

Speaking to The Citizen at the scene, police spokesperson Captain Joep Joubert said the driver was alerted by a flashing light inside the van that the back door was being tampered with.

“The driver left the van and saw two suspects off-loading cash boxes. He then opened fire and the two suspects drove off in a white Volkswagen Polo GTI with round lights. It was hit by bullets,” said Joubert.

“It is believed a third suspect fled the scene on foot. We cannot confirm if any of the suspects were injured.”

Joubert said the robbery at the mall was the first of its kind in the five years that he has been at the station.

No description of the suspects was given. However, police vehicles and a helicopter was dispatched to comb the area for the vehicle.

“Investigations are on-going,” said Joubert.

The robbery at the mall follows an armed robbery at Carnival City casino in Brakpan, adjacent to the mall, last year.

A group of suspects had stormed the casino’s main entrance, injured two security guards and a reserve officer, and fled with an undisclosed amount of money from the safe. One man was arrested in connection with the robbery.
