At least 71 people have been arrested during police operations in the south of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Saturday.

“Of the 71 arrested, four were arrested for murder,” Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

“Three were arrested for a murder that happened in Eldorado Park while one was arrested for a murder that occurred in Moroka.”

He said police held operations across Soweto, Eldorado Park and Lenasia from Friday evening to the early hours of Saturday morning.

Ten others were arrested on drug-related charges and four for housebreaking and theft.

“They were found in possession of stolen property which was taken in Lenasia. They also had an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition. ”

One person was caught driving a stolen car.

Another 10 were arrested for assault while five motorists were caught driving under the influence of alcohol.

“They will appear at various courts on Monday,” said Makhubela.
