Gun battle ‘over EFF posters’

A man can be seen on Twitter holding a gun while allegedly overseeing the removal of EFF posters.

Pictures of an as-yet-unidentified man who seems to be waging a private war with Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) volunteers are making the rounds on Twitter.

The scuffle apparently started when the man allegedly removed EFF municipal election posters at the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati district in North West.

“The Regional Secretary of the EFF in the Dr Ruth S Mompati Region commissar Kabelo Tshite was today pointed with a gun by this white man for posting EFF posters on a public place where this boer painted his adverts illigally (sic),” EFF North West also said.

The man allegedly assaulted the volunteers and pointed a gun at them. He can be seen in the pictures holding what looks like a 9 mm pistol.

“Today, our Dr Ruth Mompati Regional Sec and his postering team were assaulted and threatened by gun point by this racist,” EFF member Leigh-Ann Mathys (‏@LeighMathys) tweeter.

In the build-up to the August 3 local government elections, intra- and interpolitical violence has emerged in different parts of the country. If it’s not ANC councillors fighting over positions, it’s ANC and EFF members fighting against each other.

Last month a KwaZulu-Natal ANC councillor, Thami Nyembe, was killed and his wife critically injured when their car was shot at in KwaNongoma. In April, ANC councillor Mbuyiselo Dokolwane was shot dead in Freedom Park near Eldorado Park, in Johannesburg. Also in April, another ANC councillor in Durban‚ Zodwa Sibiya‚ was shot and killed at the city’s notorious Glebelands hostel.

Julius Malema went on Twitter to name the man he alleges shot an EFF supporter. This after a female EFF member was shot and wounded at a Polokwane taxi rank while distributing campaign materials. The woman was shot after she was allegedly involved in an argument with a person wearing an ANC T-shirt.

Last month, an EFF member was allegedly shot by an ANC supporter in Nkomazi, Mpumalanga. This after ANC supporters tried to block the EFF community meeting at the Kamachekeza Stadium.

The country’s political parties are all currently hard at work trying to woo votes to vote for them in the upcoming local government elections.
