A two-year-old girl has been taken to a place of safety after her mother allegedly burnt her with a hot spoon when the child wet a couch.
The mother, a 24-year-old from Ivory Park in Tembisa, Gauteng, was arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, according to Midrand Reporter.
Ivory Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said the mother was arrested on May 23 after members of the police station’s victim empowerment unit received a call from a community member who told them about the alleged abuse of the child.

“One of the sector managers was informed and proceeded to that address, and brought the woman and the child to the station,” said Sekgobela.
“The child had injuries on her legs and on her back. The mother was asked what happened to the child and she told police that the child relieved herself on the couch and she burnt the child several times with a hot spoon.
“The child’s relatives were asked if they would want to take the child but they said they cannot care for the child. The girl has been treated for her injuries,” she said.
The woman has since appeared in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court.
Earlier this year, a five-year-old girl was beaten to death in Bloemhof, Free State after she wet herself while sleeping.
The child was asleep when her mother’s boyfriend saw she had wet herself and the urine had gone into the couch.
He allegedly tied the child up, hit her with a belt and untied her before throwing her to the floor. The child was declared dead on the scene while the man was later arrested.
