The suspects overpowered a female police officer and escaped through a roof.

Police in KwaZulu-Natal are still hunting for two suspects who escaped from the holding cells of a police station at the weekend.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson major Shooz Magudulela, the prisoners overpowered and attacked a female police officer in the cells while she was trying to lock up after delivering their meals on Sunday afternoon, North Coast Courier reported.

“They managed to escape through the store room roof. The officer was bruised on her left arm,” said Magudulela.

“A case of escaping from lawful custody and malicious damaged to property is being investigated by KwaDukuza police. No arrests have been made,” said Magudulela.

He said the suspects were being held for robbery and theft.

The police are calling on the community to assist in tracing the two suspects.

In another incident, one of six awaiting trial prisoners who had escaped from the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court was killed in a shoot-out with police on Friday.

Boksburg police acted on information which led them to a hostel in the area. Upon the arrival of the officers, two suspects opened fire on them.

The officers returned fire and killed one of the suspects.
