One person has died in an accident on the R28 in front of Silverstar Casino in Krugersdorp, on the West Rand.
A taxi burst into flames with passengers trying to escape after it collided with a VW Polo at about 7:45am, Krugersdorp News reported.
Mogale City Emergency Management, ER24 paramedics and Traffic Department officials worked tirelessly to help passengers out of the burning taxi. One of the passengers could not be freed from the vehicle and was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.
Another passenger was airlifted to a nearby hospital after sustaining serious injuries, while several others where treated on the scene and transported to various hospitals.
“A section of the R28 was closed following an accident in front of the casino on the R28 towards Pretoria. Motorists are urged to use alternatives routes until the scene has been cleared up,” Mogale City Traffic Department spokesperson, Papi Motaung said.
Bystanders have described the scene as horrific. Mark Van Niekerk helped extinguish the fire, saying: “About 8 or 9 passengers in the taxi lay on the grass outside the casino bleeding and screaming”.
