Two Implats miners missing after ground fall

The full extent and cause of the rock fall has not yet been established.

Two employees were missing on Tuesday night at Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (Implats) mine in Rustenburg following a fall of ground, the company said.

“We have two employees missing,” said spokesperson Johan Theron.

In a statement, Implats confirmed the incident, stating that a fall of ground occurred at Impala Rustenburg’s 1 Shaft during the morning shift.

“Regrettably two employees have been reported missing. All other employees have been safely evacuated from the working area and a search and rescue operation by mine rescue teams is underway to locate the two missing miners.

“The full extent and cause of the rock fall has not yet been established as the priority and focus remains the search and rescue operation. Further announcements will be made as soon as additional information becomes available.”
