Sedibeng mayor Mahole Simon Mofokeng has launched a scathing attack on Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), calling it an organisation of angry people.

He told students at the University of the North West, Vaal Triangle Campus in Vanderbijlpark yesterday that they mustn’t be misled by the red berets.

“When they call a meeting you must not go. The EFF will never solve the country’s problems, because it was formed by angry people who want to challenge the ANC. EFF was formed out of anger,” he said.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, who spoke at the same event, urged students from a working class background to use their education to better the communities they came from.

“Education should be used to produce intellectuals. Once you acquire knowledge, it will only have a meaning if you use it to advance that working class where you come from. Society must benefit from your knowledge,” he said.

Mantashe said students had to take their role as future leaders seriously and that they have a responsibility to build the future.

“Education determines a person’s ideological outlook, but there must also be a mindset change,” he said.

Mantashe also poured cold water on the critics of the much-vaunted National Development Plan, saying many people who say bad things about it haven’t read the document.
