The child suffered a fracture and an open wound to the head.

A three-year-old girl suffered serious head injuries when she fell from the second floor of a block of flats in Mayville in the Moot on Monday.

She was rushed to the Steve Biko Academic hospital with suspected brain damage, Rekord East reported.

Bestcare Ambulance spokesperson Xander Loubser said the child’s mother told paramedics she had left her child alone for no longer than two minutes. It was not immediately clear why she had done so.

When the mother returned, her child was gone.

“She screamed and her neighbours responded. They tried to do CPR on the child, assuming she had died and we were called to the scene,” Loubser explained.

Bestcare paramedics stabilised the child, who suffered a fracture and an open wound to the head.

“There was damage to the brain. It doesn’t look good. We went with the mother when we took the child to Steve Biko Academic hospital, which will determine the how much damage was done to the child.”

Loubser said the child did not sustain any other injuries to her body. The fire department assisted at the scene.
