About 100 people were protesting in Newlands on Monday, the Johannesburg metro police said.

The protesters burned tyres and were stoning motorists, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

Police closed Brown Road between Hamilton Street and Oosthuizen Street.

The residents were protesting about 10 illegal shacks which were demolished by metro police officers.

No arrests had been made.
