A 76-year-old man was shot dead at his house in Houghton, Johannesburg on Monday, Gauteng police said.

Two men killed the man in front of his wife around 6am, said Constable Thabo Malatjie.

It was believed that the gunmen forced open a gate at the house, which stands on the corner of 6th Avenue and Central Street.

They found a gardener, and forced him to lead them inside the house, where they found a domestic worker and the man’s wife, said Malatjie.

The wife woke her husband, who was shot when he asked what was happening.

“He was shot once in the stomach. He was declared dead on the scene.”

The men then fired two shots outside the house as they ran away, he said.

Nothing was stolen from the house. The motive for the shooting was not known.

Malatjie said no one had been arrested and police were investigating a murder case.
