Trade federation Cosatu president S’dumo Dlamini has called on the workers not to be misled and be confused by people who want to form a federation to rival Cosatu.

Former Cosatu boss Zwelinzima Vavi along with other National Union of Metalworkers of SA (NUMSA) members are championing the formation of the new federation. Speaking at Cosatu House in Braamfontein on Tuesday, Dlamini said: “Former Cosatu leaders want to form a new federation purely because they crossed swords with Cosatu. You don’t form a federation because you are angry. You will form an angry organisation.”

Dlamini said the intention of the new federation is to weaken the unity of workers in favour of the bosses. Dlamini lambasted Vavi, saying the new federation is designed to provide employment for him. “He is not a worker,” he said. “He is not having a payslip.”

Cosatu general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali said there is no federation that was formed over the weekend and there is no federation that will be formed anytime soon. “More than half of those so-called unions that were paraded there do not have numbers,” Ntsalintshali said.

“Most unions will not commit to a federation because they can see that this is an anti-Cosatu project by former Cosatu leaders.”

Ntshalintshali added that Cosatu is not a helpless organisation that its disgruntled former leaders will attack it without consequences.
