A tollgate employee arrested in connection with fraud is expected to appear again in the Leslie Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The employee, Tango Jose, was arrested last Tuesday morning at the Leandra Tollgate, near the border of Gauteng and Mpumalanga following an alleged tip-off from someone who witnessed card skimming and called police, Mpumalanga News reported.

According to Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Dineo Sekgotodi, Jose was found in possession of a debit card-skimming device which he allegedly used to skim the debit cards of motorists passing through the tollgate.

Card skimming is a form of bank card fraud which involves the use of a cloning device which copies a customer’s banking information stored on a debit or credit card’s magnetic strip.

This information is then used to manufacture fake cards which the fraudsters use to make transactions on a victim’s account.

Jose appeared in the court on Thursday last week where the matter was postponed for further investigations. He is currently out on R1 000 bail.
