A bed factory along Nirvana Drive in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg was completely gutted by a blaze this morning.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and community patrollers attended to the scene and spent hours battling to extinguish the blaze, Rising Sun Lenasia reported.
According to EMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, it took about four hours to extinguish the fire and there were no reports of anyone injured.
“There were about five fire engines and one tanker attending to the scene, however, fire hydrants were a major problem,” Mulaudzi said.
Lack of fire hydrants forced those battling the blaze into a tight corner.
“Because there are not enough fire hydrants in the area, we had to connects hoses to a garage close to Trade route Mall,” said Sheraaz Hassam, a Lenasia resident and a patroller.
Hassam said fire hydrants are a problem in Lenasia as they are not marked and in that regard are a major contribution to loss of property.
