Fifteen men, arrested in a blitz in Garsfontein, east of Pretoria, are expected to appear in court soon.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller, the suspects were arrested while in possession of stolen goods and a firearm following a shootout with a security guard on Monday morning, Rekord Centurion reported.

“Although most facts are still to be confirmed, police have strong reasons to believe the 15 are linked to the shootout, in which a security officer was attacked by three unknown men,” Miller said.

He said investigations were ongoing but a charge of attempted murder had been opened at the station by the security firm.

Brinant Security firm operations manager Carl Coston said one of the company’s vehicles was shot at when a reaction officer responded to a burglary alarm.

He had been tipped off to a crime in the area.

As the reaction officer drove in Rubenstein Avenue around 03:30am, he noticed two men carrying what he suspected was stolen property.

Then a third man jumped over a wall, also carrying suspected stolen property. The man immediately opened fire.

Coston said his officer suffered minor injury when shattered glass went into his eye.

Police later raided the area and arrested 15 men with stolen property.
