A solution to the ongoing Pikitup strike needs to be found as a matter of urgency, according to Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau.
Addressing the media following a special council meeting, Tau started off by giving background on how the strike started, mentioning court interdicts granted to the City in the wake of illegal work stoppages.
Tau said a decision has been taken that criminal and civil litigation be pursued against Samwu, the municipal union representing striking Pikitup employees, for the trashing of streets and the transgression of other city by laws.
The disciplinary hearings against some striking employees which started last week, were concluded on Wednesday. “The determinations of the presiding officer will still have to be processed,” Tau said.
