Mahlangu is expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrates’ this afternoon.

#OutsourcingMustFall leader Vusi Mahlangu has been arrested following his claims that he was abducted last week.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said Mahlangu was in police custody on charges of perjury and defeating the ends of justice, Rekord East reported.

The 33-year-old sent a message to fellow activists last week stating he was either kidnapped or arrested in the Eastern Cape. He claimed to have been be released on Friday.

Mulaudzi said the arrest came after Mahlangu and his lawyers went to the Hawks offices to submit an affidavit detailing the alleged abduction.

“The version of these events differed from what we were following and information from other witnesses. He is in custody and will appear in Mthatha Magistrate’s Court [this afternoon].”

Last week, Mahlangu claimed he was followed by a car last Tuesday morning.

He was said to have sent a text to fellow-leader Mametlwe Sebei saying: “I am either kidnapped or arrested and I am bleeding… In a dark place at Mthatha, my phone is about to die.”

On Saturday, the leader took to his Facebook page, stating he was released from a “dark interrogation chamber”.

“A lot has happened since one was taken to that dark interrogation chamber,” he wrote.

Fellow leader Mametlwe Sebei said he had not heard from Mahlangu since his return.

“The only time we spoke was when he confirmed he had returned. He spoke briefly but did not elaborate on what happened during his abduction. We still don’t know the details.”
