The Mpumalanga traffic officers arrested over the weekend have been granted R5 000 bail each after appearing in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court, on Tuesday.
Eight of the officers were arrested on Saturday and four were arrested on Sunday at various locations in the province, Mpumalanga News reported.
According to their bail conditions, the suspects are to hand over their passports to the investigating officer and are not allowed to leave neither the country nor the province without informing the investigating officer.
According to provincial Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Dineo Sekgotodi, Hawks members were acting on information that there were traffic officers who were involved in corrupt activities.
“An operation was subsequently launched. Some of the officers were arrested at their homes, while others were brought in by their lawyers,” she said.
Further investigations into the officers’ alleged corruption are ongoing.
