A man wanted in connection with a number of murder cases has been shot dead in a shootout with police in central Durban, police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the shooting near the well-known John Ross House building on Durban’s Margaret Mncadi Avenue (formerly the Victoria Embankment) happened shortly before midnight on Thursday.

Detectives following up on information in relation to a number of murder cases in Mpumalanga approached two men in a blue VW Golf. Zwane said the occupants allegedly shot towards the detectives, who retaliated, fatally wounding one of them. The second suspect was arrested.

He said two unlicensed firearms were recovered from the car.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics had responded to the shooting but by the time they arrived at the scene the murder suspect had succumbed to his wounds.
