An unidentified man was pronounced dead after he fell in the Boksburg Lake, in the East Rand, on Saturday afternoon.

Fire fighters, paramedics and police officers responded to a drowning incident at the lake just before 4pm, Boksburg Advertiser reported.

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi said the man was sitting with his friends under the tree at the lake when the incident occurred.

The exact details leading to the incident are not yet known.

Ntladi said that specialised rescue divers were called to the scene and immediately retrieved the man from the water.

“Unfortunately he was declared dead on scene by paramedics,” said Ntladi.

Police have since opened an inquest docket.

In a separate incident, the body of a teenage boy who had drowned was discovered in the Ixopo area in KwaZulu-Natal in January.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said authorities and divers from Port Shepstone responded to the scene and found the 15-year-old boy had disappeared beneath the water while fishing with friends in the Umzimkhulu river.

“They searched in the river and eventually retrieved the youngster’s body from the water. He was declared dead,” added Wiid.
