The tributes that poured in from all over the world and South Africa for cricketer Clive Rice are just a small symbol of the impact he had on the lives of cricket fans and others both home and abroad.

A household name, Rice’s passing reminds us of two things. Firstly, everyone of us will die whether we have made an impact on the lives of those around us or not, and secondly, that sports stars hold a special place in the hearts of people.

A highly regarded player and known face in the South African cricketing fraternity, Rice made an impact on his Transvaal “Mean Machine” team, opposition and fans alike. By all accounts his last few years were spent with the same fighting spirit that made him one of the finest all-rounders of the game.

We send our condolences to his friends and family – and may his memory continue to inspire young cricketers for years to come.
