Timely reminder of JZ’s radioactivity

Although there is nothing substantially new in yesterday’s Sunday Times stories about President Jacob Zuma’s arms deal exploits with Thales and the so-called spy tapes, the headlines are a timely reminder about the person who now heads the national nuclear energy executive co-ordinating committee.

Millions of South Africans don’t trust Zuma, whom Schabir Shaik was convicted of bribing. Zuma’s track record of evasiveness includes not only the multibillion rand arms deal but also the R246 million spent on his private homestead at Nkandla. How can we expect such a man to deal honourably when handling a Russian nuclear arms deal worth more than R1 trillion? Doubts are compounded by the official announcement that details of the Russian agreement will not be disclosed.
