Cuffs, irons for robbery suspects

EDITORIAL

If robbery suspects Lucky Segwape and Nthabeleng Matlatfi had been wearing handcuffs and leg irons when they appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court this week, there would have been no shoot-out and no escape.

Two policemen would not have been wounded, one seriously.

Regrettably, violence in and around South African courts is nothing new. Nor is corruption within the SAPS and Correctional Services. These security personnel are responsible for safety in courts.
