Accountability in marches is key

Twelve years ago the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) banned student organisation Cosas from the province’s public schools.

The decision followed student body’s illegal march through Johannesburg CBD led by then Cosas president Julius Malema which saw hawkers’ stalls looted and several car windows smashed.

We have lost count of how many of this ANC-allied organisation’s protests have ended up in mayhem marked by theft and vandalism of property and harassment of street vendors, without any consequences for both the organisers of the march and those taking part in the event.
