EFF and Numsa coalition is a rumour worth watching

Rumours of a National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) coalition contesting this year’s elections under the leadership of suspended Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi should be taken with a pinch of salt for now.

Twitter was abuzz a few days ago as Vavi and ANC national executive committee member Tito Mboweni engaged in a war of words about this supposed coalition. Vavi dismissed the rumours, but without ever explicitly denying them.

Where there’s smoke there’s fire, the old saying goes; but even if there are secret talks between these groups, it may not result in any sort of political alliance.

But if it does happen, it would be a good move for all involved. Numsa and the EFF are both positioned to the left of the ANC, and draw support from the same sections of the population. Vavi, even with the office sex scandal hanging over his head, is a less polarising and controversial figure than Malema.

A coalition with a powerful economic message – perhaps combined with strong opposition against e-tolling, an issue Vavi was strongly involved with before his suspension – may very well surprise at the polls.
