Amla: great gent, great batsman

If there are qualities outside the almost robotic accumulation of runs that Hashim Amla has brought to world cricket in an era of trash-talking superstars, they are his gentlemanly, almost old-fashioned sincerity and humility.

His quiet, measured demeanour seldom slips, though it did with a revealing human effect after AB de Villiers had blown the West Indies away with his 31-ball one-day century at the Wanderers.

Asked what he had said to his captain as De Villiers came to the crease, Amla said the record-breaker was going to take a few balls to look at the bowling.
