SA has reached turning point

As Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene rightly pointed out when delivering his medium-term budget policy statement (MTBPS) recently, our country has reached a "turning point" and fiscal consolidation can no longer be ignored.

Much progress has been made over the past 20 years to expand education and healthcare, broaden economic participation through empowerment and support vulnerable groups through initiatives such as social grants. But a lot of work still needs to be done.

The National Treasury has revised the country’s economic growth downwards to 1.4%, in stark contrast to the real GDP of 2.7% projected in the February budget.
